During the hot summer months, homeowners are looking to save on the electric bill. By going green, homeowners can reduce pollutants, save money and recycle reusable products and material. Going green can be done by making small adjustments to daily energy consumption. Mr. Electric has five ways to go green and save money.

Use LED light bulbs

Incandescent light bulbs are a part of the past. Consider using LED lights. LED lights are what many people are moving toward. They are steadily replacing the outdated and less energy efficient incandescent light bulbs. LED lights use less energy and last longer than incandescent light bulbs.

Get a programmable thermostat

Make the thermostat work to save money. Programmable thermostats allow homeowners to set the temperature of a house or room to the time of day. Programmable thermostats can keep the temperatures higher during the day when no one is home and start cooling the home before the homeowner arrives. They also reduce home energy use. Programmable thermostats are energy saving tools homeowners should consider installing.

E-waste recycling

Plastics, paper and aluminum are only the basics when it comes to recycling. Recycling e-waste such as old phones, iPods, printers and monitors will keep these used technological devices out of area landfills.

Install smart technology

Smart home technology can turn out the lights when no one is home or someone leaves a room. It can also turn off other electronics when they are not being used to save money on the electric bill. Unplugging electronics that are not in use for several hours or days at a time will also save money on the electric bill.

Watch your water

Water heaters generate heat through the use of electricity and the costs of operating a water heater tends to rise during the summer months. Lower the electric bill by turning down the temperature of the water heater to the normal setting, cutting shower time to five minutes and wrapping the hot water tank with jacket insulation.
