“I also said that I wasn’t sure it was financially worth me staying in the States for as long as you have in mind, which was well into October. So I said, ‘Thank you but no thank you, I don’t think it is practical.’
“Anyway, Darren got involved and the club persisted. The conversation went on while we were in California and it got to a stage where I thought what they were saying was practical if the Controller of BBC Radio Five Live agreed.
“So the first thing I did when I got back from the States was to set up a chat with Jonathan Wall, the Controller. He was really enthusiastic, he saw it as exciting from my perspective and he also thought it was flattering to Five Live as well.
“Once Jonathan said he was happy for me to return in October – usually it is September – there was nothing against it. The more I look at it the more excited I am.
“I feel I’ve put my fingers in an electric socket with Atlanta and have had a surge of electricity. It’s something new, something exciting, something challenging and I’m going to make sure it works.”
