Navi Mumbai: Taking advantage of the ongoing festive holidays, when most of the government offices remain closed, a group of unknown men was seen trying to hack mangroves along the coast close to Mansarovar railway station. A few alert citizens and environmentalists then informed the Cidco officials and also the state forest department.

“Already several mangroves have been hacked near the Harbour railway line, between Kharghar and Mansarovar railway stations. One can easily make out how a large patch of the coastal land has been denuded of the mangroves by some land grabbers on Thursday evening; after which I immediately informed the senior Cidco officials,” said activist Anarjit Chauhan.

CIDCO Senior spokesperson, M Ninawe, told TOI: “After I was informed about the incident, I immediately asked the officials concerned to check it and curb any destruction.”

Environmentalist D Stalin of the NGO Vanashakti told TOI: “I have also informed the senior forest officials about this systematic destruction of the green coastal areas during government holidays. In this regard, I have also suggested that it will be useful if constant patrolling of surviving mangroves is done even during holidays in order to protect them.”

TOI had also written in the recent past how land grabbers have also constructed a wall around the mangroves, close to Mansarovar railway station, so as to block the inter-tidal waters and thereby `choke’ the mangroves.

“The Bombay high court has clearly stated in its earlier order that various local bodies and government agencies must work together through good coordination in order protect the mangroves in areas such as Navi Mumbai, Thane, Mumbai and other parts. Hence, we will be writing to the various authorities to remind them that it is their duty to protect our eco-sensitive coastal region from land sharks,” said Chauhan.

Another Kharghar based activist, Ravi Srivastava, added that any illegal construction done inside the mangroves must also be summarily demolished.

Environmentalist, Stalin, also informed that similar type of mangroves destruction was seen at Airoli, where some people are doing crab farming by first removing the mangroves.

The activists also suggested that google satellite images should be taken and preserved regularly so that such green wipe out can be detected and action taken.
