Caroline Joseph has a place in her heart for northeast Calgary.

When her family moved to the city from the small Caribbean country of Antigua and Barbuda in the mid-1970s, they started with a home in Rundle. And for the past 10 years, she has lived in the established neighbourhood of Saddle Ridge.

“I just love the diversity and sense of community the northeast holds,” says Caroline, a document control manager for an engineering firm in Calgary.

With the Joseph family’s latest move, they’re staying in the quadrant, but in a newer community with a home featuring the custom touches they needed.

Caroline, along with her son, Jameel, and daughter, Jenelle, have taken possession of their home by Shane Homes in Redstone. The family has friends who live in Redstone, but they never explored the community as a possible place to live until deciding they were ready for a new home.

“We really liked the feel and look of it,” says Caroline, adding they were impressed by what they saw from show homes in the community.

On Redstone itself, the open spaces stood out. The Josephs were fans of its long stretches of pathways, and the community’s uncommon Participark, an area where adult-sized fitness equipment sits outside.

“Just great green spaces,” adds Caroline.

The Participark is something that was discussed early in the process of designing Redstone, says Garett Wohlberg, director of planning and communications for Qualico, the developer behind Redstone.

“We think it’s a neat amenity for residents,” says Wohlberg. “In our large park (Redstone’s sixth phase), we located the fitness equipment in close proximity to the tot lot, and the kids’ playground.

“So if parents wanted to come and let their kids play … they can use the fitness equipment, as well.”

Wohlberg says a similar Participark feature is planned for Harmony in Springbank, a new community Qualico co-manages with Bordeaux Developments.

In choosing Redstone, Caroline also points out the community’s convenient proximity to major arteries, such as Deerfoot Trail, Metis Trail, Country Hills Boulevard, and Stoney Trail.

“It’s very close to amenities,” she says. Since moving to Redstone, her early favourites are CrossIron Mills Mall, and its neighbouring Costco, each a less than 10-minute drive away.

Redstone has a six-hectare transit-oriented development site, planned to include an extension to the LRT line and a “significant component of commercial development,” says Wohlberg. A grocery anchor is planned for the development, as well.

Construction at this site will likely start in 2018, says Wohlberg.

Redstone, which opened in 2009, is about half built-out.

The community offers single-family homes with an attached garage from the $500,000s, single-family homes with a detached garage from the $390,000s, duplexes from the $350,000s, and townhomes from the $285,000s.

Its single-family homes are by Broadview Homes, Pacesetter by Sterling Homes, NuVista Homes, Trico Homes, Jayman Built and Shane Homes.

The Josephs bought Shane’s Fiesta 2 model, a home with a double car front-attached garage. Its standard plan has three bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms and measures 1,767 square feet.

But Caroline made some changes to help tailor the home to her family’s needs.

With Jameel and Jenelle both in their 20s, it was important they have the spaces they need.

On the second floor, the family decided to shift from a master bedroom and two secondary bedrooms with a bonus room, to two master bedrooms and a slightly downsized bonus room and third bedroom.

The third bedroom is there for Caroline’s mom, who visits on weekends and holidays.

They then developed the basement to include an additional bedroom and bathroom with a rec area.

“We can have the room we need but still be together as a family,” says Caroline. “To us, that was very important.”

Another reason the Josephs decided to build through Shane Homes was that it allowed them to use the company’s Expressions Design Studio, putting their interior and exterior selections in one convenient location.

“It was a great time-saver for us,” says Caroline. “It allowed us to see all the different components together at the same time, to get a complete picture. It let us see the colours schemes all together, instead of going to all the different vendors and suppliers they have.”

“I went with a warm grey, which allows me to incorporate browns and blues,” she adds. “Actually the design centre helped me. I was able to see the different shades of grey that would allow me to warm it up or cool it down.”
