The Wonderla Environment and Energy Conservation Awards – 2016, instituted by Wonderla Holidays, was presented to schools across Karnataka recently.
Actor Harshika Poonacha and environmentalist Vijaya Shankar presented the awards. Chairman of Wonderla Holidays George Joseph, managing director Arun K. Chittilappilly and head of Bengaluru Wonderla park Thimmaiah, were present.
Vagdevi Vilas School, Marathahalli, Bengaluru, bagged the first prize with a cash prize of Rs. 50,000. Maharshi Vidya Mandir Secondary School, Hosur, Krishnagiri, Tamil Nadu, and Sri Sathya Sai Loka Seva High School, Dakshina Kannada, shared the second prize, while the third place was shared by Coorg Public School, Gonikoppa, Kodagu; Vidyashilp Academy, Bengaluru and De Paul International Residential School, Srirangapatna.
Wonderla Holidays also gave away special recognition awards to 20 other schools across Karnataka,
The award has been instituted to acknowledge and reward schools with the most innovative and effective practices to conserve and manage natural resources and to create awareness about the environment in young minds.
Mr. Chittilappilly, said: “The aim of the award is not merely to rate, but to encourage schools to protect and conserve nature and support to build up a healthier environment. We are delighted with the responses that we have received this year and would like to thank each participating school who came forward and took part in this noble initiative.”
This year, 108 schools across Karnataka participated and the shortlisting of nominations was based on an audit of the school’s overall environmental practices carried out by its management and students.
