We’re barely a month into fall — AKA Pumpkin Spice Latte season — but Starbucks fans are already getting mentally prepared for winter. As big of a deal as the PSL has been for the past 14 years, the Starbs’s annual holiday cups may actually be responsible for more excitement, seasonal spirit, and, of course, controversy than that spicy autumnal drink. And according to a Reddit user, the 2017 version of the wintertime cups will be in stores sooner than you think.
Earlier this week, Reddit user DarthSpoopy posted a photo of what appears to be a stack of the new holiday cups in the r/Starbucks subreddit with the caption, “Just got it in our order. Holiday short cup design!???” If the cups in the picture are actually this year’s seasonal cups, you can expect to be sipping out of white cups with red and black doodles of wrapped presents, doves, hearts, Starbucks cups (meta), and intertwined hands surrounding the classic green mermaid logo.
Although Starbucks has yet to release any information about the 2017 holiday cups, another Reddit user claiming to be a supervisor at Starbucks all but confirmed that DarthSpoopy’s cups are the real deal when they recommended that the picture be removed from the site. “Cute but I suggest taking it down. 😉 (Not being picky but there’s a reason the STOP sign is on the box don’t want to spoil the surprise for [customers].) It’s okay to open in the store just a No No to post things online if they have not launched,” AppKerman wrote. And another commenter seemed to further confirm the news, writing, “We ended up having to use them in my area due to a warehouse issue.”
However this year’s wintertime cups look, they’ll hopefully cause less of a fuss than those from years past. In November 2015, Starbucks revealed that year’s holiday cups, which featured a [red ombré] (https://www.teenvogue.com/story/starbucks-holiday-red-cup-drinks-back) background and had basically zero decoration on them besides the green logo. Almost immediately, scores of customers expressed their outrage at the company’s failure to include explicit references to Christmas on the cups, by posting videos in which they claimed that Starbucks “hates Jesus,” and plotting boycotts of the brand.
In response, Starbucks released a statement in which they upheld their commitment to inclusion of all religions. “Our core values as a company is [sic] to create a culture of belonging, inclusion, and diversity. Each year during the holidays we aim to bring our customers an experience that inspires the spirit of the season and we will continue to embrace and welcome customers from all backgrounds and religions in our stores around the world.”
And if you’re looking to avoid any and all controversy while still getting your fill of Starbucks’s wintery goodies, don’t worry. Huge jugs of the brand’s Peppermint Mocha espresso drink have been on Target shelves since September, and in early November, a new holiday-themed collection of gadgets, mugs, gift cards, and more will be available in Starbucks stores across the country.
