TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) — A Tallahassee trend is a potentially lifesaving one. House fires over the holidays are on the decline for the fifth-straight year.

This holiday season, there were 11 house fires– compared to 38 house fires five years ago. More than half of this year’s fires were cooking fires with damages topping $480,000.

Tallahassee Fire Department spokesman Jonathan Kimbrel says, “A fire in the home is physically and emotionally stressful for the residents, but that feeling is magnified during this time, during the holiday season.”

Every year, TFD keeps track of holiday fires with their ‘Keep the Wreath Green’ fire prevention campaign. All of the light bulbs on a wreath at Dorothy B. Oven Park are green, but are changed to red for each home fire. The goal is to keep as many of the bulbs green as possible.
