But you probably will not have heard of the largely unsupported, uncelebrated army who keep us safe. Across the country, Surf-Lifesaving Clubs, manned by volunteers, supported by donations, recruit and train the lifeguards who keep us safe, from ‘Nippers’ (juniors) onwards. While the RNLI are now the employers of Britain’s lifeguards, it is the little-known, virtually invisible volunteer surf-clubs who train them and get them through exams, who put our red-and-yellow-clad guardians of safety on our beaches. So, next time you’re off to the beach, google the local surf-club and support it. They need your help to keep us safe. And stay between those red and yellow flags…
