Before Easter, many Christians observe the six-week period of Lent. This solemn holiday is meant to commemorate the 40 days of Jesus’ temptation in the desert before his crucifixion. During this time, Jesus fasted, so in solidarity Christians will give up indulgences, vices, and certain luxuries. Forgoing items such as alcohol, meat, or sweets is not uncommon.
But giving up life’s luxuries wouldn’t be complete without living it up one last time before a fast. Thus, the holiday of Mardi Gras developed. Set on the day before Ash Wednesday, Mardi Gras (a.k.a. “Fat Tuesday) is an excessive, indulgent holiday. Throughout French-influenced cities in the United States such as New Orleans, revelers eat, drink, and party hard before giving up these extra things for Lent.
But, because Easter and Lent are tied to the Jewish calendar and Passover, the date of Mardi Gras changes from year to year, meaning it can come and go without you even realizing it (or getting a slice of king cake). So, when is Mardi Gras 2017?
Mardi Gras 2017 is set to take place on Tuesday, February 28.
