Going inside the world’s first building that uses the power of algae, we are offered an insight into how ingenious constructions could begin to power themselves and supply excess energy and products to other communities.
Strategic Science Consult (SSC), a company based in Germany, had long been aware of the ability of microalgae to generate heat, but it had no idea how to put this to practical use. Its vision was to have algae incorporated into buildings so that they could become self-sufficient and make urban areas productive. The idea would have remained a dream had SSC not partnered with Arup, an architectural engineering firm looking for innovation in sustainable technologies for its buildings.
The two teams of scientists and engineers brought together their complementary skill sets of sustainable innovation and architectural design to create a new type of building. The result can now be seen in the German city of Hamburg. Thirty-five people have already taken up residence. The algae-infused windows harness the power of the sun and create heat that can be stored and then used throughout the building as necessary.
