Who doesn’t love a delicious ice cream on a hot summer day? When ice cream lovers are choosing from all those delightful flavors, the last thing they might expect is a dose of the harmful pesticide known as glyphosate — but that’s exactly what they might be getting.
The Organic Consumer’s Association (OCA) sent out Ben Jerry’s ice cream samples to an independent laboratory for testing. Ten out of 11 ice cream samples tested positive for glyphosate, the key ingredient in Monsanto’s herbicide product known as Roundup. According to the lab analysis: Peanut Butter Cup, Peanut Butter Cookie, Vanilla (2 samples), Phish Food, The Tonight Dough, Half Baked, Chocolate Fudge Brownie, Americone Dream, and Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough all contained glyphosate residues. Cherry Garcia was the only flavor tested that did not contain herbicide residues.
Ben Jerry’s, which is owned by Unilever, purports to lead with progressive values and a 3-part mission that includes: “To make, distribute and sell the finest quality all natural ice cream and euphoric concoctions with a continued commitment to incorporating wholesome, natural ingredients and promoting business practices that respect the Earth and the Environment…(and) initiating innovative ways to improve the quality of life locally, nationally and internationally.”
Sorry, Unilever, glyphosate has never been and never will be considered a wholesome or natural ingredient that respects the earth, in my opinion, and, it certainly does not respect quality of life. Instead, the herbicide has been linked to serious health and environmental degradation.
On July 7, glyphosate joined the ranks of other cancer-causing substances, in the state of California, according to the state’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA). The World Health Organization‘s (WHO) International Agency for Research on Cancer listed the herbicide as “probably carcinogenic” back in March 2015, after reviewing approximately 1000 studies. Of course, Monsanto claims that the cancer labels are unfounded, but there are also allegations that the company faked its own studies to get the herbicide approved.
According to research published in the International Journal of Cancer there is a significant link between non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and glyphosate exposure. Other research published in the journal Occupational and Environmental Medicine strengthens the link between cancer of the lymphatic system and the herbicide. New research also confirmed earlier studies that showed glyphosate can cause changes to liver or kidney function in humans.
The Organic Consumers Association reports that exposure to the herbicide has been linked to many forms of cancer in humans, including: cancers of the adrenal glands, bladder, brain, heart, lungs, lymphatic system, pituitary gland, prostate, salivary glands, skin, and thyroid gland. In a new study in the medical journal Chemosphere, researchers found that glyphosate also caused excessively high fish mortality.
Disturbed by the lab results and the fact that Ben Jerry’s bills itself as natural, the Organic Consumer’s Association is demanding that the Vermont-based company owned by Unilever immediately begin transitioning to organic dairy products in its ice cream. The OCA is also calling for a national and international consumer boycott of the company’s products until they make the switch to organic. Additionally, the group is insisting that natural food stores stop selling the company’s products until they make the switch to organic ingredients.
