Residents told of their safety fears after a man was shot on a city street .

The victim was blasted in the leg in Aberdeen Street, Winson Green , just before 9.30pm on Saturday.

The 41-year-old was taken to hospital with serious injuries and remained in a serious condition on Sunday.

The scene was sealed off after the shooting but the cordon was later lifted.

Residents told the Mail they heard what sounded like gunfire before police officers arrived.

A woman, who lives close to the scene of the shooting, said: “I heard some very loud bangs around 9.30pm last night and my dogs were going mad.

“I thought it must have been fireworks but it could have been gunfire.

“There were several bangs.

“I later looked outside my window and saw police.

“They had cordoned off part of the road.

“There was a shooting further down the street a while back.

“It’s scary to think this is taking place on my doorstep.”

And a man, who lives in the street, said: “I was working last night and got home around 10pm.

“Part of the road by the two new houses was cordoned off with police tape.

“I heard a man had been shot in the leg on the street.

“It’s not a shock to be honest as it has happened on the road before. There is a big problem with drugs.”

In December 20015, shots were fired at a house in Aberdeen Street in the early hours.

The owner of the house, a 29-year-old man, called police at 5.05am after hearing a series of bangs.

He found damage to his front door when he went outside.

Armed officers increased patrols in the area after the incident.
