  • When painting a boat, avoid coatings with copper or tributyltin in them. Don’t use chemicals to remove deteriorating paint, as they will contaminate the water.

    • Buy used boats, boat gear and parts instead of purchasing new ones. There are always perfectly good boats available. When it is realistic to do so, repair equipment instead of replacing it.

    • When going from one body of water to another, make sure your boat doesn’t carry invasive plant species with it; these can harm wildlife and ruin the water quality.
