Green Bay –
Saturday’s season opener for the UW-Green Bay Phoenix men’s basketball team will be unlike any other in program history — and it has nothing to do with the high expectations placed on the defending Horizon League champions or their star player.
Green Bay tips off its season Saturday against Illinois-Springfield, but instead of green and white they’ll be wearing red, white and blue for military appreciation day.
Furthermore, the names on the backs of the jerseys won’t be player names but the names of local military members who gave life and limb for our nation.
“Mary Ellen Gillespie, our athletics director, really wanted to do something around Veterans Day honoring the military and had the idea of using an organization called Being There, Reaching Out to help us select fallen military from the area to recognize on the back of the jerseys. We will have their families here for the game and allow them to take part in pre-game ceremonies, and then we will be giving them the jerseys after the game as well,” Assistant Athletic Director Andrew Gavin said.
Tip-off is at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Resch Center.
