Entertainmentwise joined Robbie Williams on the roof top of Selfridges last night to mark the launch of his new menswear line Farrell alongside his creative partner and former Burberry designer, Ben Dickens.

The great and the good from the menswear industry mingled in the sunset, sipping on champagne and Pimm’s as they awaited the entertaining chat about Take That’s wardrobe malfunctions and more serious style endeavours, instigated by GQ’s editor-in-chief, Dylan Jones.

Inspired by Robbie’s grandfather, Jack Farrell, the line launched in September 2011 and possesses a World War Two essence, but has a little something for every guy at the same time  – from military style winter coats to quilted jackets perfect for an evening at the pub.

And aside from a spot of beatboxing from Robbie, as well as hailing his former arch enemy, Liam Gallagher’s clothing line Pretty Green as having done “very well,” the former naughty boy seemed intent on serious business.

On Liam’s line, Robbie gushed: “I’ve been on the Pretty Green website and looked at their clothes, and it should do really well because it’s really well put together.”

“If we achieve what Pretty Green has achieved in what seems like a short space of time then that would be brilliant,” he said of his former rival’s fashion line.

On the general pieces from the label, Burberry’s Ben Dickens said: “This is a brand for every guy – whether you’re going to the pub, taking your missus to the shops, going out with the lads. They’re pieces which will last you for years.”

Robbie hinted that he created the line due to his dwindling music career, stating: “No it all started because I was at a loose end and had nothing else to do.”

And on his role in the production of the design, he said: “I see myself as a DJ of clothes. I remix things that I like – it’s a lot like music. I know what I like – every piece in the collection is based on pieces from my own wardrobe which I love.”

On the inspiration behind Farrell: “My grandfather, Jack Farrell – Jack the Giant Killer – was a huge man, built like an Irish navvy, fought in the Second World War, lived on a council estate […] The integrity of his influence runs throughout this collection.”

And from what Ben has brought to Robbie’s brand from his experience at Burberry, he said: “It taught me a lot about how the business works, how to get things made at a good price, how to check for quality etc.”
