BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) – Lawns across Western New York are mostly brown these days.

With nature not providing the necessary water for your lawns, plants and gardens over the past few months, much of Western New York is now in a severe drought. That means it’s time to water smart and give your lawn some hope.

According to H2ouse, when drought conditions exist, let the grass grow taller than usual. The mower should cut taller as well.

To conserve water, use less fertilizer. Lawns that are fertilized use more water and are more prone to droughts.

If you think watering your lawn every day helps, think again. Lawns develop shallow roots when you water them everyday. Giving your lawn a drink of water two-three times a week will encourage deeper and stronger roots. This helps lawns survive droughts.

The best time to water your lawn is at night. This limits the amount of evaporation as opposed to watering during the day. The best time to water is between midnight and 6 a.m.

Fortunately as of now, there are no bans on watering your lawn and garden in the Buffalo area. However, if the drought gets worse, you may want to think about prioritizing your plants from valuable and “must save” to low priority and “save if you can”.

If your lawn has joined the brown side, fear not. Grass goes dormant when it’s not watered over a two to three week stretch. Turning on the sprinkler and irrigating your lawn overtime will spring it back to life. However, don’t let that lawn go without water for too long. You may not be able to revive it after a certain amount of time.

If none of these ideas work for you, there’s always painting your lawn green
